The church was first mentioned in 1196 and was once surrounded by camp walls. It stands on a hill above the square, at the highest point in Lenart, giving the town a special weight. In the era of the Ottoman raids the church also had a defensive role to play. Thanks to its high-quality architecture and detailed masonry, it is the finest example of the “Slovenske gorice Gothic”. The parish is a one-storey building covered by two-sloped roof.
