The landscape park, enclosing some 851 hectares of land, was placed on the list of protected areas in 1992. It encompasses part of the Slovenske gorice hills between the Drava and Pesnica valleys, more specifically between Završka vas, Korena, Voličina and Hrastovec. It is part of so-called isolated karst, which has both above- and below-ground karst features. The isolated karst area is 1-2 kilometres wide and stretches from Duplek in the Southwest to Hrastovec in the Northeast.

Hrastovec ponds are located on the northern part of the forested hilly Hrastovenjak plateau on the surface of 4.2 ha. They originally belonged to Count Herberstein, who also owned the nearby lake Komarnik. The area is an important habitat of endangered plant and animal species; since 1992 it has been protected as a natural monument.

The accumulation lake near the village of Radehova in the Pesnica valley was formed by the repulsion of Globovnica. It is 750 m long and 400 m wide, with its surface measuring 24 ha. It is a popular place for fishermen and there are several species of fish in it: sheatfish, carp, pike, bass and some others.

Another name for Lake Pristava is the Šiker's pond, lying near the famous Šiker Inn. The lake is 750 m long and 500 m wide, its surface is about 30 ha.

The accumulation Komarnik Lake is located approximately 2 kilometres west of Lenart in Slovenske gorice. It encompasses  26 hectares and has an average depth of 1.5 metres. To the east of the lake lies the Črni les forest, to the southeast grasslands and intensely cultivated fields. After the Pesnica river had its stream regulated and the area of the Pesnica valley was ameliorated, the lake with its immediate surroundings became the last haven and important habitat for some animal species and the sole habitat for many rare and endangered plant and animal species. Aquatic birds in particular are highly diverse, as for them the lake represents one of the most important nesting sites in Slovenia. Otters also call the area around Komarnik Lake and its surrounding streams and ponds home. A pathway with information panels surrounds the lake, along with two bird-watching posts. The lake can be accessed in two ways: either by parking at old people's home St. Agata  or by parking underneath Hrastovec castle.
